Clinical Nutrition in the Herbal Paradigm with Paul Bergner

This day-long intensive will cover the essentials of dietetics and clinical nutrition for the practicing herbalist, whether of Western of Asian herbalism. In the morning session, we will discuss the historical balance of macronutrients and micronutrients in the human diet, a history of dietetics, and issues of deficiencies and imbalances that have arisen since the industrial revolution We will then offer a general but flexible corrective nutritional regimen for the average modern patient. The three macronutrients and several of the most important micronutrients will be described according to what actions they would have in the herbal paradigm. For instance, Magnesium is antispasmodic, cardiotonic, tonic and adaptogenic, and supplementation to correct a deficiency may accompany herbs given for these purposes.

In the afternoon session we will discuss how to assess six common patterns of nutritional imbalance and deficiency, and recommend specific regimens and approaches for each. The patterns include: 1) The SAD Diet (Standard American Diet) pattern 2) The Disordered Eating pattern 3) The Junk-Food Vegetarian pattern 4) The Stress-Carbohydrate pattern 5) Insulin Resistance pattern and 6) the Food Intolerance pattern.

Paul Bergner is the Director of the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism. He has studied and practiced natural medicine since 1973, with formal training in naturopathy, medical herbalism, clinical nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, flower essences, yoga therapy, and bodywork, including undergraduate studies in pre-medicine and psychology, and 50 semester hours of doctoral level medical studies at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine. He has published the Medical Herbalism journal since 1989, and has written seven books on medical herbalism, nutrition, Chinese medicine, ethnobotany, and naturopathic medicine. He has also edited periodicals on clinical nutrition and naturopathic medicine. Paul has taught clinical herbalism and clinical nutrition since 1989 and has mentored more than 300 students through clinical residencies at the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies and the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism since 1996. He is currently on the clinical faculty of the Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism in Boulder and the School of Traditional Western Herbalism in Portland, OR. He also has taught nutrition academically at both the undergraduate university and master's level. He lectures on the topics of medical herbalism and clinical nutrition nationally and internationally.
