Join herbalists Brian Kie Weissbuch, Ingrid Bauer, and Benjamin Zappin for one or two days of botanical adventuring in the High Sierra discovering the great utility of many native plants. Participants will learn how to identify, harvest, prepare, and use approximately 20 valuable plant medicines. This is an excellent event for locals who want to day trip to learn about their environment and for seasoned clinicians who want to expand their materia medica.  Instructors will explore use of plants within the framework of Traditional Chinese Medicine and within the context of treating modern illness in an integrative setting.

5 hrs of CEU pending for California Licensed Acupuncturists per day (10 total) [Category 1 CEUs, CEP Provider 538]. No refunds or exchanges following August 1, 2017.

* Unlike many of our field studies we WILL NOT be facilitating camping or providing food. We will provide recommendations for camping locations upon registration.

* Classes will involve moderate hiking and some elevation gain. Please contact us if you have questions about your capabilities to meet the demands of the environments we’ll be learning in.

Botanical Field Study of the Sierra Nevada: Using Western Herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine with Thomas Avery Garran and Benjamin Zappin

Join Thomas Avery Garran, author of Using Western Herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Benjamin Zappin, L.Ac. for a 3 day camping intensive studying the medicinal flora of the High Sierra Nevada mountains.

The class will survey 20 different highly useful medicinals and emphasize their inclusion within the Chinese diagnostic framework and modern and classic Chinese formulaic structures.

Participants will learn how to locate, identify, sustainably harvest, and prepare medicinals for use as teas, topical preparations, and tinctures.

Special attention will be paid to clinical specialties of mental health, infectious disease, women's health, pain management, and dermatology.

The class is open to practitioners and students of Chinese Medicine. Please contact us before registering if you'd like to attend and not sure if your herbal training is congruent with our educational objectives.

Notes on camping:

We'll be camping in stunning national forest land in a defined campsite at 8600 ft elevation w/ potable water and toilets in an area about 4 hrs from the Bay Area. We will coordinate camping for attendees. As we're often asked if family and friends can come on such events, our answer is that this is fine but we can not guarantee a camping spot for them. Adults who wish to attend classes must be registered. Participants are responsible for their own food.

Botanical Field Study: Southern California Desert & Coastal Range

We’re very excited to offer a field study of the Southern California desert and Coastal Range early this Spring, as we only offer these classes every two or three years and they are very fun and inspiring!

We strategically aim to offer this class during the peak desert bloom so that a feast for the eyes can complement the practical applications of the medicines we will be studying. This class aims to be intellectually engaging for practitioners of all backgrounds and practically suitable for herbal enthusiasts of any level of experience.

The aims of this two day course will include the following:

  • Identification of over twenty useful medicinal plants
  • Ethical wild harvesting

  • Traditional and modern applications of desert plants

  • Application of native plants within the context of Chinese medicine and Chinese formulas

  • Infectious disease, respiratory health, dermatology

  • Topical and first aid applications

  • Culinary uses of common plants


Schedule: Begins Saturday March 18 at 9 a.m. near Anza Borrego and concludes Sunday March 19 until 3:00 p.m. The class will be approximately 2 hrs from San Diego and 2.5 hrs from the Los Angeles area. Participants are encouraged to come and camp with us on the evening of Friday March 17.  Other details TBA.
